The magic of “Alien” was never the monster itself. It was always the mystery that surrounded the monster that made the film compelling. All of the sequels up until “Prometheus” centered on the monster creating further death and mayhem. “Prometheus” once again tried to explore the mystery surrounding the monster, specifically its origin, but came up with something so convoluted, esoteric, and boring that further exploration of that topic seemed like a waste of time.

And by the look of the “Alien:Covenant” trailer, Ridley Scott has decided that this time he is just going to cash the check and return to the flawed sequel formula of making a monster movie.

The franchise ran out of gas after two films because there’s not much you can do with the simple and elegant premise. No more, please. And no more Terminator, either.
