Patrick Brice‘s previous films “Creep” and “The Overnight” uncovered the potential of a darker side of the mumblecore genre. Though his films are cut from the same cloth of the films of Mark Duplass or Joe Swanberg, Brice finds the menace and paranoia in human intimacy and social interaction. Brice’s comedy is mired in the ever-battling anxieties and curiosities of the unknown variables of interpersonal relationships.

Lupita Nyong’o might just emerge from 2019 as something of a horror icon. Not only did she headline Jordan Peele‘s horror smash “Us,” but she is also leading Abe Forsythe‘s (following up 2016’s “Down Under“) Sundance horror-comedy “Little Monsters.” Nyong’o’s casting, along with the zom-com premise and the addition of Josh Gad, make this one of the most intriguing prospects of 2019.

Rupert Wyatt’s career trajectory post-2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” has certainly been curious. After the tepid response to his follow-up “The Gambler,” Wyatt has mostly turned towards working in television, directing episodes of “TURN: Washington’s Spies” and ‘The Exorcist‘ series. Most intriguing though is that Wyatt is slated to direct episodes for Showtime’s highly anticipated “Halo” adaptation due in 2020.

Hot off the heels of world premiering at the Venice Film Festival, as well as debuting on this side of the pond at Telluride and Toronto, “First Man” is shaping up to be a bona fide Best Picture contender this Oscar season. Described as an “often spectacular and satisfyingly old-fashioned epic” in our Venice review, “First Man” has received mostly effusive praise for the performances of Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy, Justin Horowitz’s score, and, of course, Damien Chazelle’s assured direction.

When Jonny Greenwood isn’t creating haunting melodies for Radiohead, he’s composing some of Hollywood’s most masterful and unsettling scores. The guitar maestro, most recently known for composing the scores for “You Were Never Really Here” and “Phantom Thread,” the latter of which earned him an Oscar nom, will now be bringing his iconic music to the New York Philharmonic.

The director behind “The Diving Bell And The Butterfly” needs another success after the critical and commercial disappointment of his previous film “Miral.” If his latest, a biopic charting the last days of Vincent Van Gogh (Willem Dafoe), is as successful as it looks, Schnabel could see himself into awards conversations.

László Nemes‘ feature debut “Son of Saul” cemented a place in the pantheon of historical dramas about Nazi Germany. With claustrophobic, hand-held camerawork following closely a traumatized protagonist, Nemes crafted a harrowingly confrontational film, forcing viewers to be voyeurs to the atrocities of the Holocaust. The effect is immediate and undeniable; “Son of Saul” is remarkably immersive and almost too horrific to bear.

All that said, three new clips from Nemes’ latest film “Sunset” promise to build upon the filmmaker’s adeptness at helming intimately told stories set against a significant historical backdrop.

Dave Bautista‘s ongoing battle with Disney grows more complicated by the day. Earlier this month, we reported that Bautista has threatened to quit the “Guardians of The Galaxy” franchise should Disney throw out James Gunn’s original script for ‘Vol. 3.’ Now, Bautista’s involvement with the troubled film has been thrown further in question. Or at least, the actor is taking nearly every opportunity to cast some doubt and or call Disney’s bluff.

Although her role in this summer’s “The Darkest Minds” did little to inspire, Amandla Stenberg seems to be headed to a star-making fall season, as two of her films will make their debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her performance as Starr in the YA-book adaption “The Hate U Give” is already building buzz, and it looks as though she will shoulder that film’s all-too-relevant themes of today quite powerfully.

As far as those on the side of Disney and Marvel, and those in support of fired “Guardians Of The Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn go, actor Dave Bautista is very much on the site of “f— the [corporate] man.” Though the rest of the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” have all compiled an in-support statement, Bautista, who plays Drax in the ‘Guardians’ universe, remains the only member of the cast still rallying against this decision, openly deriding the farce Disney has created for themselves.
