Not as relatable is that weight twisted into a hilariously morbid narrative: a child lost to a ritual sacrifice at the hands of a washed-up Christian rock star who has made a deal with the devil for one more shot at stardom. You know, that old chestnut. “Extra Ordinary”— the debut film from Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman — takes nearly every heavy ghost and exorcism film impeded with bereavement, and flips them on their heads with humor and ingenuity to spare, which more than makes up for the times when the film gets away from them.

At once, it’s a dumping ground for major studios to unpack their unwanted, potentially bad, films before kids go back to school. Simultaneously, it’s an opportunity for the smaller distributors to get a jump on awards season to release provocative efforts that would likely be edged out during the fall competition.

On this week’s episode of The Discourse – the show in which we discuss film and television reviews, occasional news, and any other pertinent pop culture items that we feel the need to weigh-in on – we choose to discuss the latter, ignoring the five(!) wide releases that came out this weekend because, well, none of them sounded all that interesting.

So with that, on the latest episode of The Discourse – the show where we discuss film and television reviews, news, and any other items in the zeitgeist that we feel the need to weigh-in on – we’ve recruited an outstanding family of writers.

Robert Daniels (812FilmReviews, Mediaversity), Alisha Grauso (Atom Insider), and Griffin Schiller (FilmSpeak, The 4th Wall) join me this week to discuss “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” the first official spin-off in the nearly twenty-year-old franchise.

The air in the discourse is that this summer has been one of the weaker ones in recent memory. Whether or not that is the case, we hope to at least attempt to reverse that sentiment.

Why the rebrand, you might ask? Aside from having a nice ring to it and a name to differentiate ourselves from the other wonderful shows on the podcast network, the show has morphed over the last year from merely Rodrigo and I (with occasional input from fellow Playlisters) discussing the big movie of the moment to a rotating door of diverse guests with differing perspectives, weighing in on not just the major film releases of any given week, but television, streaming, and the all-around wave of change in the way we consume our media.

Welcome to another edition of The Playlist Podcast, the show where we discuss film news, reviews, and any other pertinent pop culture items. On this week’s episode, I’m joined by Mike Shutt (No Excuses) to discuss this weekend’s major release, in which a toy doll comes to grips with its own sentience and the inevitable existential crisis that follows… but enough about “Child’s Play.”

Standalone stories based on creepy totems or spooky entities is a refreshing way to continue a horror movie franchise without going down the rabbit hole of demystifying the very thing that made the original film connect in the first place.

READ MORE: The Best Films Of 2019… So Far

Sadly, there’s also a familiar, regurgitated downside to the approach—floors creak, objects float, loud noises crash, and large, empty spaces on one side of the frame become occupied when the camera pans over and back—that make these films feel indistinguishable from one another.
