Alfre Woodard is nearing legend status if she isn’t there already and has been a terrific character actor for decades. While she first got her start in movies — earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for 1983’s “Cross Creek” —more recently, she’s played major roles in several hit television shows, including “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “Empire” and “Luke Cage.” Now, she’s starring in Chinonye Chukwu’s critically-acclaimed “Clemency,” a heavy drama that premiered earlier this year at Sundance to great raves (including ours) about a warden drifting away from her husband while she executes death row inmates in a maximum-security prison.

Despite it initially labeled a mini-series, HBO isn’t done with “Big Little Lies,” and neither is Nicole Kidman. Hot off the success of two critically acclaimed films in “Boy Erased” and “Destroyer,” not to mention her surprising kick-assery in “Aquaman,” Kidman looks like she might have another big year in 2018; “Big Little Lies” being her most anticipated project.

The “Game of Thrones” is almost over. After eight years of building up to one epic conclusion, many are excited, some relieved, and others, distraught. After all, the last few seasons have felt like they’ve been wrapping up much too quickly, this final season is no exception. In this final bout, we’re getting only getting six episodes full of carnage, high body counts, and likely a few twists and turns along the way.

An arms race to create the next big fantasy series is well underway. With the “Harry Potter” franchise in the rearview mirror, the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise faltering, and “Game of Thrones” on its final season, a fantasy void is opening. To fill this gap, Amazon is moving forward with producing content for “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Wheel of Time,” Netflix is remaking “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and Lionsgate is producing both a television and movie series off of “The Kingkiller Chronicles.”

Never one to shy away from a fight, Disney is also entering the fray with an adaptation of the “Artemis Fowl” book series, a series more in the vein of “Harry Potter” than the other aforementioned titles but still in the fantasy genre.
