That said, there are plenty of worthwhile new and returning series that will help ease us into the binge-heavy months of the year. Apple TV+ sees the return of two popular series, and HBO has a significant release with its “Dune” spinoff series.

Elsewhere, there are plenty of series with A-List talent attached, from Michael Fassbender to Colman Domingo.

Festival favorites like “A Real Pain” and “Bird” arrive for their official, long-awaited premieres. Elsewhere, there are two Dwayne Johnson films, an animated sequel, the second film from Luca Guadagnino in 2024 alone, and even some holiday-inspired features to help roll us into December.

It didn’t stream anywhere, wasn’t available to rent, and physical copies were either rare, out of print, or expensive. The film, a visually gorgeous drama that prioritizes practical effects and was shot in more than 20 countries, became something of a cult classic for those in the know.

Plenty of stories over the years deal with female fury, isolation, and overall messiness. In the Starz adaptation of the novel of the same name by CJ Skuse, those feelings are amplified through a bloody killing spree as our antihero protagonist desperately seeks to be seen, no matter the consequences — or body count.

It’s not just the coloring that lends this thriller to that sort of comparison. The latest film from writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George is a product of a bygone era of filmmaking, for good and bad.

Following the busy September festival schedule, October offers plenty of festival favorites and potential award contenders. Some of these festival favorites, such as “The Outrun,” premiered at the 2024 Sundance. Others, such as “Anora,” have made their way through multiple screenings from Cannes to the Toronto International Film Festival.

Alongside these buzzy films are independent science-fiction features, streaming releases, and movies perfect for the Halloween season.

Such is the dark comedy “Mr. K” exists in, the latest from director Tallulah H. Schwab (“Confetti Harvest”). Riddled with mounting anxiety as the walls begin to close in, “Mr.K” is half an exercise in dread and half an example of showing one’s hand too soon.

In the early moments of Sook-Yin Lee’s “Paying For It,” he wakes up next to his then-girlfriend, Sonny (Emily Lê), who announces that she thinks she’s begun to fall in love with another man. She’s looking for acceptance to see “where this goes.” Chester, almost inhumanely agreeable, acquesses.

The big names are the spinoff series “The Penguin” and “Agatha All Along,” both of which focus on breakout characters from their respective predecessors.

Elsewhere, there’s the recently nominated fourth season of critical favorite “Slow Horses” and the final season of the HBO series, “My Brilliant Friend.” For comedy there’s the latest bite-sized series for FX with “English Teacher.” If none of that strikes your fancy and you’re looking for something more peculiar, check out the upcoming adult-animated series from Zack Snyder.

While there are a few new shows to take note of, “Kaos” with Jeff Goldblum (Netflix) and Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” dramedy starring Vince Vaughn, August TV is mainly driven by many famous and acclaimed returning TV shows.

There are three adult animated series, one of which is a sequel and the others spinoffs. It’s a big month for Apple TV+ as the streamer is poised to premiere four new original series, while other services, such as Netflix, are more focused on reality television.

The film follows the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the mass extermination of Jews during World War II. Rather than focusing on Eichmann himself, the film revolves around those whose lives were touched by the trial and his crimes.

But elsewhere, there are plenty of exciting and attention-grabbing films getting their theatrical runs.

As is the case these days, it’s a big month for streaming series, with new science-fiction shows coming to Apple TV+ while Disney+ gets to host two major franchises.
