Krakauer\’s assertion is valid. The filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur confirms that he arbitrarily picked the author and portrays him as unwilling to help in a crisis in which even the sherpas could not go out. Really – and to be technically correct – this amounts to defamation.
Incidentally, the book was a "can\’t put down" item in which the scene depicting the fatal decision to ascend Hillary\’s Step with the storm closing is one of the most chilling scenes I have ever read depicted. Years after reading Krakauer\’s description the imagery remains with me.
In conclusion, I found the book to be honest and accurate in detail – the movie not so.

This clown sure took artistic license with Into the Wild. A lot of that story was made up too.

Initially, I agreed with JK that Kormákur took dramatic license. I remember reading Lou Kasischke was snowblind and I think I remember reading that JK\’s tentmate Stu asked JK to help try to help flash lights outside, but JK was too tired to get out of his bag. But I don’t recall, in any written account, that Boukreev directly asked JK for help (maybe stuck his head in tent?).

But, then I listened to a 2002 interview with the climber Simone Moro (Anatoli\’s partner who survived the avalanche that killed him in \’97 on Annapurna). Moro said @39:27 that Anatoli opened JK\’s tent asking for help and JK replied \’I\’m not a guide" and closed the tent. No wonder Kormakur\’s not worried about being sued for libel!

If they took dramatic license, they should have taken far more, because the movie is boring as hell. Utterly forgettable.

Krakauer is a liar. He admits he stayed in his tent while others died, and he slandered Bookreev, who went back out to hunt for climbers. If you want the truth, read Bookreev\’s book, "The Climb."

I think Krakauer is only trying to grab attention and let people know that he\’s not a coward. Just for the record Toli the Russian had a different story to tell about Krakauer.
