Dudes. He IS a pompous ass. And he has no problem with that distinction. And he wasn't being a critic in this instance. He was being himself when asked a question about the Big Heads vs. commercial authors. It's well documented that it gripes his cookies that he isn't considered a literary author. Which he is. And anyone who's read The Stand or Gerald's Game or The Body can testify to that.

And if you haven't gotten through a King book, then you can't really talk about the merit of his work, right?

Yes, he chose Twilight by William Gay as his #1 pick in
2007. Sheesh. Get your facts straight, people. Nothing more irritating than an uninformed discussion. At least King has his facts straight.

Personally, I can't get through a Stephen King book to save my life, and I've tried. Does that mean he's a terrible writer and has no talent? No, and I would never say that.

I thought a critic's job was to provide a critique, which is constructive criticism- not a generalized bashing, and King managed to work in pot-shots at Earle Stanley Gardner, Dean Koontz, and James Patterson as well.

He also indirectly insulted Meyer's readers, implying they're all young girls who get cheap thrills from Meyer's vampire. If his intent was to influence younger readers about their reading choices, I think all he managed to do was to come off as a pompous ass.

He's entitled to his opinion- I just wish he found a more respectful way to express it.

I can’t believe Stephen King has the gall to call someone else out on bad writing. Because inserting Stones or Bowie lyrics into prose is so much better than extrapolating an actual feeling.

I could not agree with Stephen King more on this. Plenty of teens watch Gossip Girl. That doesn’t make it a great story. People just need to admit it, Twilight is the equivalent of an Anne Rice piece if the CW took it to Hollister and glammed it up.

well, i am disturbed to find i agree with steven king on something. i couldn’t agree more about the quality of her writing. i was forced to read the first book by friends who just can’t get enough. and more disturbing is that they, like me are in their 20s. I’m gonna blame disney movies for the current state of female-think. the whole “one day my prince will come and make me complete” is really quite pathetic. now, how can one explain this to friends? it’s easier to just keep quiet and vomit on the inside.
