Lawrence Kasdan is returning this year with Darling Companion. A 9 year gap between that and Dreamcatcher.

It's been 6 years since David Lynch's Inland Impire. He's made a few short films, released an album and done some other great weird stuff, but he's long overdue for a feature. Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue, Diva, The Moon in the Gutter, IP5) hasn't made a film in 11 years. Way too long for another fantastic director. And then there's Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Heaven's Gate) who hasn't made a feature film since 1996's dreadful The Sunchaser. He did make a short film as part of a collective of directors for 2007's To Each His Own Cinema, but… no one saw it. Cimino a notoriously difficult director is also a flat out visionary (on his first three films). Some studio/mega-producer really needs to step up and help bring him back. He's had no less than 14 different films go through some stage of production development only to be dropped/scrapped. It's been 32 years since Heaven's Gate. Time to forgive. Give him a real budget to work with already.

Glazer and Dominik are so good. Interestingly, both started out making music vids in their home countries then made their feature debuts in 2000. Now this year they are both releasing only their third film. But they will be worth the wait.

Interesting..i am really curious about A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charlie Swan III..and for Cogan's Trade (i don't care for Brad Pitt actually, we see him too much on screen these days..let's others as much talented of not more actors work directors !) but to see the awesome and riveting Ben Mendelsohn in a lead part could be seriously worth it..i am exited, it is time for him to shine !

Guys, PTA and WKW are known for taking long gaps between movies. They aren't exactly making comebacks. These are filmmakers who haven't intended to be away for so long, but for various reasons have been out of the loop.

Yeah, as Dirk Diggler just implied, this article seems severely limited. Paul Thomas Anderson (5 years) and Alfonso Cuaron (6 years) spring to mind immediately (though I know you've mentioned "The Master" and "Gravity" regularly elsewhere on this site).

One note: Spike Lee's L.A. Riots movie and "Time Traveler" are not the same thing – they're two separate projects.

Andrew Dominik is gonna be the Nicolas Winding Refn of 2012: directing the most hip and stylish crime drama with a hot star in an unusual leading role. Damn, the cast of Cogan's Trade is legendary! Henry Hill and Tony Soprano are back.

Don't know if he counts (since he hasn't exactly been out of the public eye), but Jayne Mansfield's Car is the first directorial effort for Billy Bob Thornton in 11 years.
