Andrew Stanton has had a ton of success as a filmmaker. Well, success with animated films, at least. He won two Oscars for films such as “Finding Nemo” and “WALL-E,” but his attempt at live-action filmmaking, the 2012 feature “John Carter,” has gone down in history as one of the more notorious box office flops. But that hasn’t dissuaded Stanton from trying his hand at live-action filmmaking one more time, with the upcoming “Chairman Spaceman.”

According to Deadline, Stanton is in early talks with Searchlight Pictures and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films to helm the upcoming feature, “Chairman Spaceman,” based on Thomas Pierce’s New Yorker short story of the same name. The film will follow the story of a cutthroat businessman in the near future who gives up his wealth and attempts to redeem himself by joining a mission to colonize the solar system. Pierce is aboard to adapt his own short story for the big screen.
As mentioned, Stanton is probably best known for his work at Pixar, on films such as “Finding Nemo,” “WALL-E,” “A Bug’s Life,” and most recently, “Finding Dory.” However, when it comes to live-action, the biggest film he’s worked on is his “John Carter,” which was a box office failure at the time of its release in 2013 but has gone on to gain a new life in recent years as a cult favorite among sci-fi fans. So, even though “John Carter” isn’t regarded as an overall success, Stanton isn’t entirely to blame for the failure, as his filmmaking wasn’t the biggest contributing factor for that film’s issues. As far as more recent live-action experience, Stanton has worked with TV series such as “Strangers Things,” “Legion,” and “Better Call Saul.”
Obviously, it’s unclear when “Chairman Spaceman” might arrive in theaters, as the film is still in early development.
