Actually, I came across this comment in another blog:

To clarify, Fox Searchlight has announced that the songs were made for the film in 2005. When in 2006 it looked like it wouldn't receive a theatrical release, the two recorded an album featuring the songs. Then, at Sundance in 2007, the film took off.

Yeah, even though I'm a big fan of "Falling Slowly" & think it's by far the best of the nominated lot, I still think it's technically ineligible.

As the anonymous poster pointed out, the song first appeared on an album called "The Swell Season" in 2006, which consisted of a bunch of songs Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova wrote together. (The album was named after a Josef Skvorecky book, though I don't know if that was the inspiration.... which would be key in this whole eligibility debate.).

I can't be sure of this, but apperently, Hansard & Irglova then took most of these songs & crafted a film around them ("Once," obviously). The film & soundtrack both came out in early-to-mid 2007. Though I'm sure the film had earlier origins since it played the Sundance film festival of that year.

And as if all this weren't questionable enough, Hansard's band, The Frames, also re-recorded "Falling Slowly" on their 2006 album, "The Cost" (released in Europe 10/06... & in the US 2/07).

So "Falling Slowly" definitely seems to have been composed in 2006. Does a song actually have to be written in the year for which it's nominated? Or does that not matter? I assume that as long as it's originally written for a specific film, it would just be eligible for the year in which the film is released. But I guess the real question is: Was "Falling Slowly" written for the film "Once?" Or did the filmmakers & songwriters just decide to use a song that was already written for the album "The Swell Season?"

Sorry for my lengthy post!

I didn't realize Falling Slowly was on the last Frames record, I don't follow them closely, but I do think the song was reworked which made them eligible? And yes, I'd probably rather see Eddie Vedder over THREE Enchanted songs. Absolutely.

Where is there a Three 6 Mafia when we need them?

Wow, I didn't know Glen Hansard was dating Marketa Irglova in real life. That is creepy. I don't understand how that song was eligible for Best Original Song as it was on The Frames last album and his solo album, both released in 2006. Weird. And I know you didn't like the Eddie Vedder soundtrack for Into The Wild, but you have to admit it would have been nicer to see Guaranteed in there over THREE songs from Enchanted. I mean, how boring is that?
