Oh come on none of these movies will be looked on that kindly in the years to come. Most are only thought well of because of current political dynamics as the writer correctly summarized. Those dynamics are failing rapidly (see ratings!) and will be replaced soon enough.

Dunkirk has the biggest chance to last, but then only as one of Nolan’s works, and not really a stand out one at that. None of the rest are going to hold up as classics. No one will care or remember them 20 years from now as Forest Gump, Unforgiven, or even Braveheart are remembered now. And no one 10 years from now will be arguing passionately how Dunkirk got robbed, as they do about The Dark Knight (IT DID GET ROBBED!).

Right now we are in a time where leftist politics dictates Hollywood, and The Shape of Water was the best inter-sectional anti Trump work of 2017. It deserved to win as it played the game the best.

After I read this I was like, “You know, they actually made a strong case… therefore Jessica must have written this.” (Yep.) The basic thesis – Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream, not because it’s most people’s favorite but because it’s everyone’s second choice – makes sense, and Jessica has a good point that if the ‘vanilla’ choice in this case is a movie about a woman having sex with a fish man, we could be doing worse. I feel a little better about the movie winning as a result of this article, though I still say Nolan should have won for “Dunkirk” (a colossal directing achievement) and “Get Out” should have won Best Picture (not only is it mind-opening with its message but it is simultaneously the most purely entertaining Hollywood movie I saw last year).

In reply to David. Glad others think this too. Much better movies were made in 2017. This was barely Del Toro. Dumb random things happen, with several characters two sandwiches short of a picnic. A movie for morons masquerading as ‘romantic fantasy’, a genre that has seen much better.

This film will be considered one of the worst BP winners ever. It will rank alongside “Crash”, “Dances With Wolves”, and “Birdman”. Dunkirk, Get Out, Call Me By Your Name, and Phantom Thread will have waaaay better history and legacy.
