@Kate H Alan Ladd Jr backed the first star wars and that\’s it. THX and American Graffiti were both made thanks to Coppola putting his name on them. Regardless of who else may have "championed" them. Coppola got them made.

Star Wars toys sell because of the story, not the other way around. Look at toy sales of movies that do not resonate with people.

The thing everyone is missing is that he never sacrificed story for toy sales. If you actually look at what\’s going on in the story of the Prequels, and if you actually look at why all those special effects are there, nothing is sacrificed, and everything is there for a reason. Don\’t be dazzled by the technology, look at WHY he included Jar Jar Binks, and what it means to the story, not just in one film, but the overall 6 part saga. Of course, a lot of fans get this, but a lot of fans just want what they got before. Their imaginations are limited to the first Star Wars. They can\’t think outside the box box Episode IV and V.

All two of them? \’THX 1138\’ was championed by Ted Ashley and John Calley at Warners (at least until they saw it and realised it was a dud, and not one that could be salvaged by decent editing and spectacular special effect like the first cut of Star Wars). \’American Graffiti\’ was backed by Ned Tanen at Universal. \’Star Wars\’ – Alan Ladd Jr. Granted, Lucas was later in a position to finance his post-1977 filmography – that magnificent body of work – himself thanks to all the money he\’d made by snapping up merchandising rights and growing fat on the action figure proceeds. Oh, except when he had to go cap in hand to Fox because the budget for \’Empire\’ spiralled out of control.

Besides the first star wars films, all of Lucas\’ other films were made either because Coppola backed him or because he paid for the film himself. It\’s sad how tired and misguided you are as a journalist.

I\’ve never understood how Han dying could be a problem for toy sales. I don\’t buy this reasoning for the change. A dead, great character can sell as many or more toys as a live one. Last I checked, Jesus merchandise is doing pretty well.
