Yes GOTG held on to the streamlined plot structure that Marvel has grown accustomed to, but they had to play it safe somewhere! With the collection of characters in that film, I think they decided to keep the plot tight to the chest in hopes of hanging on to the audience. On the flipside, I wonder when Marvel is going to try their hand at a dark, grisly superhero film akin to Nolan\’s trilogy? With the slate of films/TV shows set for the next six years, one would think that Marvel would have to try out that formula eventually (my hope is that they try it with the \’Daredevil\’ series on Netflix).

I agree with the assessment on Guardians of the Galaxy. At the end of the day it was mini-Avengers with the same sitcom beats and the same safe three act structure and family-and-friends theme. It has been some time since we got a "real" dark, edgy and most importantly – interesting superhero movie similar to Batman Begins.
PS: I know its not fashionable anymore to praise the Nolan Batman trilogy – but it "was" goddamn game changing when it came out.
