So if Bong Joon-Ho releases a movie on Netflix, that cheapens the Oscars but if Tom Brady releases Bucky Larson Born to be a Star in the theaters, that's okay?

If Netflix (or any VOD) is debuting original movies and competing with theatrical distributors, then yes they should be allowed. Netflix is constantly trivialized for their attempts to bring art to the consumer instead of floating the consumer up a creek and say "find it." Especially hard to take the Oscars seriously when they do so much to cheapen themselves all the time. Genre snobbery. Oscar bait. Oscar season, which is killing their ratings. No one has heard of the friggin movies before they are nominated.

Aside from OKJA do any of the Netflix movies actually qualify? I mean, I know there's hundreds of jokes about how easy it is to get nominated for an Oscar - make a Holocaust movie, done - but at the very least the films nominated usually are slightly memorable.
Every Netflix movie I've seen - aside from OKJA - instantly is forgotten once the credits roll.

Theatrical release has to mean more than a couple screens in NY and LA. No to the Netflix model as far as I'm concerned. Yes, things are changing, but that doesn't mean they should when it comes to the Academy Awards.
