But I have a feeling the picture itself doesn't work. There are some "tells". The trailer studiously avoids referencing anything other than the set up for the character. The superhero action story, which is at the core of all of these projects, and in this risk averse industry is what the marketing department is obligated to emphasize to protect their jobs, is barely there. No one spends $175 million dollars and endures years of litigation over rights to then sell "Man of Steel" as a father/son character study – unless they had no other choice.

And the trailer goes to great pains to make sure that almost no one delivers a line on screen – almost all of the dialog is repositioned as trailer voice over, which is often an indication of performance issues.

My gut instinct is that, if one looks past the high evoked by that great music in the trailer, it feels like the marketing department is very skillfully cloaking some problems.
