How far will two women go for their faith? “Heretic” sees two women attempt a religious conversion on a beguiling stranger. Not everything is as it seems and the pair are forced to fight for their lives as well as their convictions. “Heretic” comes from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The pair wrote 2018’s surprise hit “A Quiet Place,” following up as directors and writers for 2019’s “Haunt.”
Woods reflected on the creation of “Heretic” during its Toronto International Film Festival screening. “This one is about all of our deepest, darkest fears as it relates to what happens when we die, and our anxiety about the fact that there are so many different religions on planet Earth, many of which are beautiful,” he told ScreenRant. “And this kind of lingering question of, “What is the one true religion, and what does it mean to believe or not believe?”
“Heretic” sees Hugh Grant star as mysterious Mr. Reed, with Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East portraying Mormon girls. Grant easily steals the show in what many are citing as a memorable performance. “With his dulcet tones and calm delivery, he makes for the politest, poshest, charmingest creep you can imagine,” wrote The Playlist’s Ankit Jhunjhunwala.
The film’s official synopsis:
“Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.”
A charming stranger hides sinister motives in “Heretic.” The film opens in theaters on November 8. Watch the trailer below.
