We’ve seen it before; girl meets boy, boy asks girl out, boy and girl fall in love, and they live happily ever after. From watching the trailer, you may think that the aforementioned familiar story is what we will see from “True Things,” but the opposite is the case. “True Things” is anything but true love, and director Harry Wootliff described the film as a “cautionary tale of a destructive sexual relationship that is both complex and ordinary; a relationship that is in fact so familiar to us that it’s almost a rite of passage.”

“True Things” centers on a toxic and predatory relationship played by Ruth Wilson (“The Affair,” “His Dark Materials”) and Tom Burke (“Mank”). Wilson plays Kate, a woman sleepwalking through life when a chance sexual encounter with a charismatic stranger, Bond (Burke), awakens her. High on infatuation, Kate is headed for an intoxicating car crash.
Wilson’s Kate is a woman with a fragile sense of self and has adopted a version of herself thrust on her by society. She works a mundane job at a benefits office, so when an opportunity to break the rules emerges, she jumps on it. The rule in question? Not saying no to men and sexual advances, Blond is newly out of prison and is your stereotypical “bad boy” with a flippant attitude toward life and others, which is why he is able to turn Kate’s life upside down.

“True Things” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 to positive reviews and will be released in the U.S. on September 9, 2022.
