Millenium Actress and Ghost in the shell are also heavily present in Interstellar. Th e theme of interstellar seems based on the track entitled "Actress in Time Layers" from the anime. There are even scenes in the anime that appear in the film, especially toward the end. The main character is shown chasing the unknown in a rocket with the same motivation as the pilot in Interstellar.

I was hoping somebody else would be first to denounce this shameless ripoff of Contact. I was deeply disappointed especially after letting myself be so absorbed by the superficial virtues of this film (the way any filmmaker hopes to be absorbed when sitting before the big screen). Noting these other "influences" only drags this film deeper into the gutters of cinematic plagiarism that have come to define Hollywood. This film is to Contact what Treasure of the Cierra Madre is to Hidden Fortress. Can it be appreciated for satisfying some of the narrative and aesthetic appetite wonderfully achieved by that predecessor? Sure, but even that possible upside is overwhelmed by a sense of fraud that should move to action any true lover of cinema. Not to mention the fact that no aknowledgement is given. This sort of "film journalism" is only contributing to the decay of true film creativity with its "fanboy" permissiveness. A sad predicament for all. I wanted to love this film, I wanted to leave it prepared to return to the Magic Johnson in Harlem to support it again and again. Instead, this ruse that hopes namebrand will blurr memory, I\’ll mourn the tragic fate of filmmakers out there struggling to realize truly genuine work.

Voices of a Distant Star is a simplified version of Hideaki Anno\’s "Gunbuster" from 1988 which plot is even more closer to "Interstellar". But no anime fan these days remembers such an old thing it seems.

Still would like to see this. Although I\’m not quiet as looking forward to it now that it seems to be nolan\’s worst review film. So its worse than Insomnia.

Well, Voices of a Distant Star most likely \’borrowed\’ off of Gunbuster and Wings Honneamise. But those are uber-niche, so I could see them being more aware of the Shinkai thing.

Ugh beat me to it. Hideaki Anno\’s Gunbuster is a very well known OVA series from the 80s that deals with time dilation. Any otaku would know it.

Danny Boyle\’s Sunshine also deals with a long space journey to save mankind/Earth. It is his 2001, like this one is Nolan\’s (CE3K was SS\’s, Prometheus is Scott\’s, etc., etc.). There can be only one! (2001) Sunshine is very good until the end of the film when…something happens, I\’m still not sure. Worth seeing. I encourage all major–and minor–filmmakers to try their talented hands at a space epic, especially since it doesn\’t look like we\’re going out there any time soon. That\’s probably just as well, considering what a mess we\’ve made of things down here. Let\’s NOT go out and find new energy (read:pollution) sources, profit centers and population spaces to breed our 8 billion+ into.

I\’d throw "National Lampoon\’s Animal House" in the mix too. The way a group of people get together and do stuff, there\’s no way Nolan didn\’t take note of that.

I think there may be some Apollo 13 thrown in for good measure, no? The Right Stuff really holds up, that\’s such a great film. I didn\’t know that Speilberg was originally attached to Interstellar, but it makes sense, because I think that\’s who Nolan wants to be.

I\’d throw Gunbuster in there too. The mini-series dealt with time dilation & how that would effect human relationships long before Shinkai\’s work.
