Somehow it’s gratifying to see Spielberg and Scorcese together trading props even though you know deep down on some level they have to be in the ultimate competition with each other.

I think Spielberg is really grappling with making films that he wants to make and films that will please audiences. It’s like he would like to be making more ambiguous, darker films, but can’t bring himself to get too far away from the Spielberg of Old. This is why something like A.I. is good but extremely flawed. And why War of the Worlds should have been great (if the old Spielberg had made it) but ended up dark and cynical in all the wrong ways (thanks to the new Spielberg). Spielberg needs to stop giving a fuck is what I’m saying. Not necessarily do what Coppola’s doing, just don’t try to do this tight rope routine. I think he has too much of a desire to be liked and make films that will please audiences; I have no doubt that kind of thing is like a drug and hard to stop wanting.

I didn’t read your liveblogging, but I came here immediately after! My thoughts–super happy for Slumdog Millionaire and Danny Boyle. I had the privilege of meeting him a while back, and he is just the coolest, nicest guy. Also happy for Colin Farrell–In Bruges was great. 30 Rock and Tina Fey are the shiz. I didn’t get the groans for Sacha Baron Cohen–he was totally fine. Laura Linney is awesomely classy. As is Steven Spielberg, although, as much as I admire and love the man, his bit about not making crap for mass audiences loses a bit of resonance considering some of his work…. Also, I now love Sally Hawkins and can’t wait to see Happy Go Lucky.

You might have noticed the way he sings, “Tell me, friend, can you ask for anything more?” is sung with the same melody has Dylan’s Senor (Tales of Yankee Power). But I’ve noticed it’s almost impossible to make a song that doesn’t have some Dylan melody or reference to it…or is it just that I’m too big of a fan.

Agreed, i Looooove the Wrestler song. Even more so that it’s so damn simple and those chords have been used 500000x times before, but Springsteen is just do damn soulful he elevates it to a thing of beauty.
