You might chalk it up to box office failure, but I’ve yet to see anything as original as Atlantis: the Lost Empire. The visuals for the Crystal and the scenery in Atlantis are absolutely stunning.

I heartily agree with Spirited Away as #1. I’d say it wasn’t ONLY the first Ghibli movie people saw, it was the door opening for many, many people to seek out non-US animation. It certainly opened my eyes to a new world. Oh, and Surf’s Up should be living in the mid 40s on this list. I am drawn back to that one more than many others on this list. What a terrible, terrible crime befell the rights to those characters.

1 and 2 are excellent picks. And I’m glad The Cat Returns and Steamboy at least made your honorable mentions. My additions: it’s not very well known, but Madoka: Rebellion is a life-changing experience. Also, The Book of Life is a work of art and certainly deserves a spot.

Why is rotoscoping not considered animation on this list but motion capture is? If anything, the rotoscoping on the Linklater films is slightly closer to traditional animation in that it’s painted frame by frame (good motion capture also requires a lot of frame by frame adjustments, but in theory you could do motion capture with little actual “animation”, just actors and well-programmed models).

Ugg, another ill-considered listicle. Or maybe just a pointless one, given peoples wildly different tastes and sensibilities.

This article manages to put the train-wreck-of-a-plot “Up!” and the plodding-and-predictable “Inside Out” in the top (!) 10, yet somehow completely omits “Frozen” and “Planet 51”, both eminently superior to half the movies on this list.

Not even an honorable mention for Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, which was in theaters last year? It was so beautiful and moving and true to the poetry! I highly recommend it.
