Thanks – great read. I absolutely *love* Play Dirty. One of those little heralded films that showed up on tv late one night and had me hooked. I don\’t think it\’s too much of a giveaway to say the ending is bleak – given the cynical tone of the film all the way through it\’s hard not to see it playing out that way. Time for a rewatch I think, and I\’ll track down some of the others you mention.

I would add Ice Cold in Alex, directed J. Lee Thompson with John Mills and Anthony Quayle. Probbaly one of the best Men on a Mission war movies made but not seen by many people.

Play Dirty is a great selection. I'd also throw in another of Caine's WWII guys-on-a-mission movies, Too Late The Hero (from Dirty Dozen director Robert Aldrich).
