This is a great film. The emphasis is more on class competition versus latent homoeroticism as in Ripley, a broader approach which works well with these actors.

Excuse moi Peter…. If Ripley wanted to bang a man, I suppose that wouldn't be considered the "best", right? Minghella's film took advantage of the cultural difference between how American men think it is acceptable to act and European men. I've actually never seen this particular aspect of society addressed in any film before (I am from Europe hence why it perhaps struck me a little more than others). It was an ingenious way of creating a misunderstanding between the two characters, fueling Ripley's rage before murdering Law's character. It made the story richer and smarter.

Oh and your piece is replete with typos. Clean it up.

I prefer The Talented Mr.Ripley, though Purple Noon is good too, but totally different.

In my opinion, The Talented Mr Ripley completely misunderstands the character. Rather than being a cold, calculating criminal genius who sees what he wants and goes out and gets it (and has us rooting for a sociopath), it makes him out to be a guy acting out of fear that his repressed homosexuality will be discovered. I prefer the former version.
