feel unfortunately compelled to make the comparison: Frances Ha nailed the existence portrayed about 1000 times better than girls. It was more sincere and thoughtful without ever being out of touch, over the top, or showy. Saw a q&a with Greta Gerwig who said the movie's main themes were friendship and privilege. Without ever being outright so, the second theme was handled with such finesse it makes me reconsider why I like Girls in the first place.

Just saw it. It's painfully mediocre. Nothing but a watered down version of Girls (which is fantastic). At times it can be genuinely funny and entertaining, but mostly it just coasts along inconsequentially, with sporadic periods in which it is seriously grating. The pacing is also a mess. I really like Greta Gerwig, but she pushed the quirky factor a bit too much at times here. Maybe it has something to do with Baumbach's (who I've always hated) involvement, though at least it's not as brutally awful as mean-spirited crap like Greenberg. Basically, I'm glad movie like this (as in realistic films about women) are being made, but with this particular one, I feel like this is a "generational statement" that has been made – and much more eloquently, with a lot more guts and humor – by Lena Dunham.
