It’s probably heretical to say, but I’m honestly surprised that Janney is considered to be the frontrunner. I just saw the movie, and I didn’t feel there was much variety in the performance; we see this character over decades and she’s just as vile – in the same manner and tone – at the beginning as at the end. Is the character one of the worst mothers in movie history? Absolutely. But I think Metcalf’s varied, subtle, and moving performance is far more deserving of the award. (And I say this as a sincere admirer of Janney’s body of work.)

Totally agree re Cinematography to the point I don’t think it’s an upset if Deakins loses because the odds are high against him (non-BP nominee vs BP contenders with high tech values).

Also agree re Metcalf— it’s how they can reward both Lady Bird and Get Out.

As for others I wonder if Score and Costumes are that locked in right now…
