Though my opinion is solidifying already after having seen a Warner Bros. screening last night, "Dark Knight" ably stands on its own with or without "Batman Begins". At a two and a half hour runtime, it's definitely an epic of a movie, but one that never runs out of gas. A delightful addition to this experience was a healthy amount of IMAX footage, which significantly adds to the feel of being on a personal, and gruesome, tour of Gotham City.

Great list. Agree completely. Also, agree on Yates - like Cuaron, he turned his Potter entry, "Half Blood Prince," into a work of cinematic art in my humble opinion.

Coens are also great suggestions.

Now that his live action film has stalled, how about Brad Bird?

The Order of the Phoenix was awful, so awful that I didn't bother seeing Half Blood Prince (but I suppose I should) so I am against Yates.

The Coen Bros would make the perfect Superman movie. They would nail the camp and the screwball comedy of the newspaper business of the early 40s (it would for sure be a period film), I'm sure their actions sequences would be early on smile inducing (like the cartoonish chase in Raising Arizona) or climatically heart pounding (like the entire second act of No Country for Old Men. Finally, I think they can really make Superman the Semetic character he was meant to be. Created by two Jews, Superman can easily be seen as symbolic of the Jewish American experience (could pass into the WASP Kent mode, but inside he knows he's different). This could be seen subtly with Superman relating to the Holocoust (taking place at the same time). Which brings me to another interpretation of the character I would love to see....

...a modern day African American Superman directed by Spike Lee. Post-Obama working class black men must feel like newly immigrated Jews of the 40s. They're accepted, tolerated, but know they're different. It would also be taking the "darker" approach to a very literal level, ha ha. It would be seen as a huge gamble but one that would probably pay off financially as everyone would be talking about it.

I should be a producer at Warner Bros. Or I should just write treatments for these.

-Hayden Maxwell, high school senior

first sentense of paragraph 3 hits it right on the nail...a Superman film shouldn't be 'dark' like Nolan's Batman films - but it should be treated seriously, with intelligence, a challange but one that would be worth it.

Good piece and great list - Andrew Niccol makes all sorts of sense. I remember Oliver Stone trying to play ball with WB regarding a Superman movie in the late nineties, and I wouldn't be opposed to that now.

How about Paul Verhoeven? Please Paul Verhoeven? How about Paul Verhoeven for just about anything?

I still like Harry Knowles' proposal: Have the Coen Brothers direct and Jon Hamm in the blue tights. It will never happen, of course, but it's not a bad idea.

Cuaron would be the best choice, but I think he's destined for better things. I just don't think Superman's that precious.
