They're almost the same age, but he seems so much geekier than her which is just about the right dynamic for them. The problem with Dunst is that she often came off almost as geeky as Maguire…
MJ should be the unattainable for Peter that he somehow ends up with. Remember her first line in the original comic was:

"Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot."
