I gotta agree with cirkusfolk on the Elliot Smith comment. That song just worked perfectly for that scene. Regardless of what you know about Smith (although it just makes it all the more sad), its so powerful and emotional. Everything prior to that scene was Anderson's sort of dark silly humor, but it was that scene that really changed the tone of the film. That song was perfect for the transition.

That imaginary Wes soundtrack rules, nice work. I love the patronizing guy at the top sounding like he's trying to teach people what diagetic music is.

Gee, thanks.

I've always like how Anderson uses the Stones in his soundtracks -- he picks a period of music that no one else ever seems to use when mining the Stones' back catalogue and I think their post-R&B, pre-classic rock era really fits the tone of his movies.

DARJEELING LIMITED was the first time one of my favorite songs was used in one of his films. Usually he helps me discover something so it was weird to hear both 'Strangers' and 'This Time Tomorrow' a few years after I had been obsessed with them.

Oh yea, and for Tenebaums I gotta go with Needle in the Hay by Elliott Smith. It may seem obvious now considering Smith killed himself via knife, but remember Tenenbaums came out two years before that. Proof Anderson has a keen sense of knowing what songs evoke what moods.

Bit o Wes Anderson trivia: he wanted to close out Bottle Rocket with the track, Billy - Main Title, but couldn't aquire the rights. Instead, his first slo-motion final scene to a film (where Dignan sadly treks back into prison, while looking back at his friends) is puncuated by actual score (a wooden flute to be exact if I remember correctly). This sucks cause it's the odd film out now, since he's ended his films since then with an actual song. Oh well, at least it made its way into Tenenbaums.

Also, the Tenebaums scene where the Rolling Stones are playing is a diagetic music scene. Meaning the song is actually being played in the film and can be heard by the characters. Thing is, when it goes into Ruby Tuesday, it makes you think the song is the next on the record when in reality it is not. Ruby Tuesday was the third track on Between the Buttons with She Smiled Sweetly coming two tracks later.

Personally, I think 2000 Man is better in Bottle Rocket, especially considering I had never heard the song before (way to use the under-appreciated songs Wes), but totally agree on A Quick One in Rushmore...prolly my fav out of all of them.
