Something smells fishy.

Transparently bad excuse #1: "We won\'t release our trailers at Comic-Con because audiences outside of the hall might want to see them."

This is, of course, a load of horse crap. The point of a trailer is to generate excitement with the public at large. These are not intended as niche product. These are tent poles. The more the merrier. If people want to watch shaky, handheld footage of your COMMERCIAL, that is a good thing. If Fox is worried that a pirated trailer won\'t do the film justice, then there is an easy fix: release a proper version of the trailer on the internet after it screens for Comic-Con. Problem solved.

Transparently bad excuse #2: "We respect our right of our Comic-Con fans to enjoy exclusive access. Since we can\'t guarantee that, they get nothing."

Making your TRAILER so exclusive that even the paying, hardcore fans don\'t get to see it is ridiculous. Then why cut a trailer at all? Why not just throw the pictures into the marketplace cold. Zero marketing.

My theory: the slate doesn\'t actually look good and the executives have some stage fright. They know that if they show up with something less than spectacular, everyone from the fans to the corporate board will second guess them. So they are hiding and hoping people swallow this nonsense.

They have marketing control issues. If a trailer is good enough to play at Comic Con then that means it is good enough to play everywhere. The Comic Con demographic is the key demographic they want to reach. Holding out won\'t make their plans better. Word of mouth is important. They will lose that a bit by pulling out.
