Many of these – like Altman, Welles,Cassavetes,Godard – CHAPLIN – a complete travesty they never won!! But – what about Jane Campion, Lina Wertmuller, Clair Denis, — all the celebrated women directors who never won an Oscar???!! Where are THEY in your list??? That is also a MAJOR travesty and yet they arent even listed???

Hal Ashby. Not the most celebrated of directors because his style was uniquely invisible, so much so that other people unfairly got the credit for his films' successes, but what a terrific actor's director. And his output in the 70s (Harold & Maude, Last Detail, Shampoo, Coming Home, and Being There (My personal favorite with an utterly genius performance by Peter Sellers) is arguably better than any 70s auteur except Francis Ford Coppola…

Okay, here are the celebrated directors who never won an oscar as Best Director – my list:
Robert Altman, Hal Ashby, Jane Campion, Lina Wertmuller, Gillian Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, Jean Luc Godard, Igmar Bergman, Sydney Lumet, John Cassavetes, Andrea Arnold, Clair Denis and Ingmar Bergman. And Andre Tarkovsky should have won one frankly – he was a genius.
