Irene Dunne in "The Awful Truth" (not a rom-com) – easily the prototype lead comedy actress role. Her Dixie Belle Lee impersonation in revenge for Cary Grant bribing the band to keep her dancing with Ralph Bellamy\’s Oklahoma oil baron earlier in the film is a thing of wonder. Her patter throughout is extraordinary, her timing, delivery from the get-go is a masterclass.
Honourable mention to Madeleine Kahn – Paper Moon, What\’s Up Doc?, Blazing Saddles & Young Frankenstein. Okay – she was never a lead, but she\’s worth remembering.
I\’d also give a mention to Maggie Smith for her lead in A Private Function.
