“Small Things Like These”
Following his Oscar-winning turn in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy returns with another powerful performance in “Small Things Like These,” directed by Tim Mielants. Based on the novel by author Claire Keegan and adapted by Enda Walsh, the film follows a coal merchant and his shocking discovery. The plot deals with Ireland’s Magdalene laundries, asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions that looked to “reform” fallen women. “Bird”
Director Andrea Arnold (“Cow,” “American Honey”) returns with her latest coming-of-age drama, “Bird.” The film, written and directed by Arnold, follows a 12-year-old girl, Bailey, who lives with her brother and younger, single dad, Bug. Seeking greater attention than Bug can afford, Bailey meets a mysterious stranger on his journey of self-discovery. Nykiya Adams, Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski star. (Read our review.)

“The Piano Lesson”
Denzel Washington produces another August Wilson adaptation with “The Piano Lesson,” with two of his sons leading the charge. Directed by Malcolm Washington, who co-writes the screenplay with Virgil Williams, the film follows the Charles family in the wake of the Great Depression and an heirloom, the family piano, which bears designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins star. (Read our review.)

“Red One”
Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans unite for the holiday-inspired action-comedy “Red One.” Directed by Jake Kasdan (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) and written by Chris Morgan (“Shazam! Fury of the Gods”), the film follows the head of the North Pole security who must team up with a bounty hunter to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus. J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Nick Kroll, and Kristofer Hivju also star.

“Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point”
Director Tyler Thomas Taormina (“Ham on Rye”) aims for holiday shenanigans in the festive “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point.” The film follows the Balsano family, who gathered to celebrate their final family Christmas at their ancestral home. Things go awry when two younger members escape in a fit of teenage rebellion. Michael Cera, Francesca Scorsese, Matilda Fleming, Elsie Fisher, and Sawyer Spielberg star.
