“Theater Camp”
Directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, “Theater Camp” follows the staff members of an upstate New York theater camp who band together following the news that their founder has fallen into a coma. Gordon also stars alongside Ben Platt and Noah Gavin, who, alongside Liberman, wrote the script. The cast includes some of the funnier performers working, such as “The Bear’s” Ayo Edebiri, “I Think You Should Leave’s” Patti Harrison, and the always great Amy Sedaris. Our review highlights the young cast but singles out Galvin, calling him “pitch perfect” and the film’s secret weapon.
Release Date: In theaters July 14 via Searchlight Pictures.
“The Deepest Breath”
While it’s not directed by “Free Solo” filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, perhaps the Sundance doc “The Deepest Breath” has revealed that there is more than one intense-peril documentarian on the street that can craft a movie with thrills, heart, and inescapable risks. Her name is Laura McGann, and by all accounts, “The Deepest Breath”— about a champion freediver who trains to break a world record with the help of an expert safety diver, and the two form an emotional bond that feels like fate— is heart pounding in its anxiety.
Release Date: July 14 via Netflix.
“Afire”
In the latest from director Christian Petzold (“Undine”, “Transit”), he follows a group of friends on holiday by the Baltic Sea as the forest around them catches fire. Thomas Schubert, Paula Beer, Langston Uibel, and Enno Trebs star with a script written by Petzold. The film made its premiere at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival.
Release Date: In theaters July 14 via Sideshow/Janus Films.
“20 Days in Mariupol”
Photojournalist and novelist Mstyslav Chernov directs the harrowing “20 Days in Mariupol.” The documentary depicts in real time the story of the twenty days Chernov spent with his colleagues in Mariupol after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. The film is compiled with his own footage along with that of sources such as AP, resulting in a timely documentary that delivers an important look at life during the war.
Release Date: In theaters July 14 via PBS Distribution.
