In terms of documentaries, I really think one of the most overlooked documentaries of the past year was "Indie Game". It's a fantastically made, highly entertaining and informative look at the world of Independent video game programers and how that world works. Videogame fan or not (I am in the latter), it doesn't matter. Go see it!

I like that you guys say these are films we "may not have seen", showing some respect for your readers. Too many magazines and sites do year end lists of great films/songs/books that "you didn't see". Way to alienate and insult your readers. You guys are classy and recognize that if we care enough about movies to read this blog, it's entirely possible we've seen one or more of these films.

I love this list. I've seen some of these gems. 'Elena' is an excellent Russian thriller. Actress-turned-director Sarah Polley's 'Take This Waltz' with Michelle Williams is a taut romantic drama. The Dardennes brothers' film, 'A Kid with a Bike' is a terrific character-driven story. They are all worth your time when contemplating your next movie rental.

Thanks for posting this list, and I have some serious movie watching to do because I have not seen any of those films. The Kid with the Bike looks like it could be really good because I love the Dardennes other movies. I was talking to a friend that I work with at DISH who said that it was one of the best films of 2012, and I canât wait to check it out! I just saw that I could rent it through Blockbuster @Home from DISH, which is great because I donât like buying movies that I have never seen. I love the wide variety of titles that they have because I can check out everything from Hollywood blockbusters to little indie movies like this!

This is a typical stuff supposed to be from Indiewire. Awesome article. Plus the "Honorable Mention" part, most of the films are related with Sundance the indie festivals. Have seen some of them. Especially Sound of My Voice is brilliant. Compliance is good too. Sleepwalk With Me is definitely should be on this list.

You had me till the honorable mentions. Kill List was one of the most soulless, pointless film experiences I've ever had (really); and The Deep Blue Sea was far from romantic or swooning! It was slow and pretentious, and despite Rachel Weisz's performance had two main characters who weren't just unlikable but despicable. Ruby Sparks on the other hand was terrific.

I only saw a few thanks to Redbox. I bought Liberal Arts which hasn't arrived yet. It was written by and stars Josh Radner (Ted on How I Met Your Mother) and also stars Elizabeth Olsen. I liked his happythankyourmoreplease which I found at the Border's going away sale. Instead of renting Liberal Arts from Redbox I ended up buying it.
