Hypothetical situation: You're a Mother. Your Mother lives with you. You also have a Daughter. That's three women, of three different ages, all living under the same roof. Your Husband (Daughter's Daddy) is overseas serving in the military. What show are you three going to watch when you sit down in front of the TV at the end of a long day? I know, I know! How about NCIS? It's non-offensive, non-violent, it's about the Navy, and it's a crime procedural. Sure, it's middle of the road, but middle of the road is where most viewers are. I'm stunned that a professional media critic could be so surprised by/dismissive of this information.

There is nothing "bland" or "guilty" about the pleasure people get from watching NCIS. The show admittedly took a while to get rolling, but from the third season on, it's been nothing but a genuine dramatic series, with more than enough comedy, suspense, mystery, and action for any viewer. Gibbs and his team have fantastic chemistry, and they deserve to be at the top of the list.

ncis is a great show. what is bland tv crap is all these so called "reality" shows.to all you people who think these shows are not scripted i have a couple of bridges for sale.

Glad to see ELEMENTARY's up there. That's a really good show. Great little mysteries and really strong dialogue and character writing.

I don't understand how IRONSIDE's so high. Didn't that get canned cause no one was watching it? And it's above THE SIMPSONS?
