I love that The Long Goodbye has been getting some love as of late. I discovered that film in college in the 1990\’s, and have always considered it one of Altman\’s criminally overlooked gems. Leave it to Altman to both re-imagine and honor the noir tradition.

I think you guys have it backwards on \’To Live and Die in LA.\’ Michael Mann was already making that kind of stuff with \’Thief\’ and \’Miami Vice,\’ when this movie came out. More likely Friedkin was influenced by \’Miami Vice\’ and the music videos of the time. Great movie though.

Great that you end with the highly underrated \’Cutter\’s Way\’ but no mention of that film\’s much more resonant original title of \’Cutter and Bone.\’ The studios panicked a little bit and changed the name to a less grisly title.

Gee, it\’s as if The Big Lebowski never existed (released 1998; Thomas Pynchon\’s "Inherent Vice" book published 2009). WTF?!? Who\’s inspiring who here? Well, at least both works owe much of their groove to Altman\’s The Long Goodbye, so there\’s that, at least.

Fun, crime-centric list. Anderson, at some point, mentioned looking at Zucker bros comedies as in influence. Even closer in spirit than \’Top Secret\’ may be the 80s film, \’Surf II.\’ It presents a very weirder take on a studio teen beach comedy and often invokes low brow Pynchonian naming schemes for its characters like Chief Boyardee as the town\’s sheriff.

Good list, though I\’d most certainly add Arthur Penn\’s "Night Moves" and "L.A. Confidential," although the tone on that one doesn\’t quite fit in with the rest of those list. An L.A. detective movie, nevertheless.
