Soderbergh acknowledges the enormous flaws in THE UNDERNEATH, which makes me respect him all the more for including it as a bonus feature on the Criterion disc of KING OF THE HILL. He knows it\’s a step in his artistic evolution, and feels confident enough in what he has accomplished since to allow people to view it, with a short interview placing it in context.

The Day the Clown Cried would be a high profile example, seeing as it has never been released. Jerry Lewis is so ashamed of this film that he keeps the only available print locked away to prevent it from being distributed. He would become agitated if anyone even mentioned the film in his presence, that is until recently when he declared that no one will ever get to see the film on account of it being "bad, bad, bad."

American History X is gripping in some scenes, but also laughable in others. It\’s not memorable but sentimental and dull. Crash was a much better film, for example, so no, it\’s not of the best anti-racist films of the last 40 years, not even close.

Danny Kaye is a tool. I interacted with him once and he was a complete passive aggressive jerk and then an outright prick. It\’s no surprise to me that his career went nowhere after American History X.
