I entirely agree with your assessment that Y would make a great TV series (particularly if they were smart enough to keep it to a limited number of seasons). I'd love to see the opening titles feature James Brown's rendition of "This is a Man's World" with flashes of the characters against a black background and the Y logo zooming out at the end.

Would LOVE to see Zero as a movie...
Pretty Deadly works well in the format it's in, I think... the mural/picture-book visuals reinforcing the fable-feeling of the narrative seems like it'd be hard to capture in motion. Likewise, I adore Fatale and it certainly could lend itself to a noir film and we could certainly use more modern noir, BUT... what are you proposing for the plot if we're talking feature-length? There's too much story to pack into 2 hours, a cliffhanger leaves a lot to be desired, and some sort of trilogy/saga format seems like a recipe for disaster...

I've not read all of these, but of the ones I have, I'm not sure they'd necessarily benefit from a film adaptation. With all due respect to what the Marcel and DC films have generally achieved, it's because the mass of mythology and storylines is a launch pad for a sui generis film -- and the worlds those companies have created absolutely encourage that type of branching off.

Conversely, a lot of the creator-owned stuff you've highlighted here is more tailored to telling the single storyline, comprised of smaller arcs, that the creators have dreamed up. Fatale, for instance, uses its various arcs to shift perspective and chronology, building slowly and cumulatively into a broader storyline. That type of narrative rhythm is necessarily episodic and usually tricky enough to distil down into TV seasons, let alone a 2 hour film.

While I think the article does more good than harm by bringing attention to some solid creator-owned comics, I do find the title problematic in that "deserve to be movies" implies that comics are merely blueprints or stepping stones for films and pushes the tiresome high-concept, elevator pitch-style writing that floods so much of the independent market today.

Also, you picked a lot of series that are already fully realized visually by the artists. I can't imagine the Fatale's unique atmosphere having anything added to it with live actors or CGI monsters. And a significant amount of Rocket Girl's appeal comes from Amy Reeder's craftsmanship and experimentation with panel layouts.

A title I think could benefit from a film adaptation is Mike Mignola's Jenny Finn series, which lost a little of its shock value due to Troy Nixey's art being so grotesque in general. I could easily see a director like del Toro or Cronenburg doing justice to the body horror aspect of the story.

I want to see many of these on the big screen. I really love that Gillian Robespierre was chosen as a possibility to take on Brian Lee O'Malley's "Seconds". I reckon that would be a perfect match. Sex Criminals and Pretty Deadly I would most definitely love to see on the screen. Most of all though Fatale should be a movie. It hits all the right markers to become an incredible Noir Horror (two genres I love). I myself would want to make that film.

Edge of Tomorrow is based on a novel, not a comic book. Same for the Hundred Foot Journey.

Why not do you work properly?
